What is Passive Fire Protection?

Passive fire protection is components or systems of a building or structure that slows or impedes the spread of the effects of fire or smoke without system activation, and usually without movement.

Passive fire protection systems are intended to:

  • Contain a fire to the compartment of fire origin
  • Slow a fire from spreading from the compartment of fire origin
  • Slow the heating of structural members
  • Prevent the spread of fire through intentional openings (e.g., doors, HVAC ducts) in fire rated assemblies by the use of a fire rated closure (e.g., fire door, fire damper)
  • Prevent the spread of fire through penetrations (e.g., holes in fire walls through which building systems such as plumbing pipes or electrical cables pass) in fire rated assemblies by the use of fire stops

Passive Fire Protection products

The demands placed on passive fire protection have become increasingly complex in recent years, partly because of pressures to improve thermal insulation and reduce energy costs.

PFP products that are installed in a building to improve its fire safety include:

  • Fire doors
  • Fire-resisting walls, floors, ceilings, and ducts
  • Firestopping and fire protection for structural members
  • Fire-resistant epoxy coatings that can be spray applied
  • PFP sheet
  • Fire-protective boxes or wardrobes
  • Protection for vital equipment such as first-aid boxes, oil or gas tanks, or other volatile sites to prevent the risk of explosion.

And also, as supplied by the The Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP):

  • Fire protection to the structural frame of the building
  • Fire-resisting doors and fire door furniture
  • Fire shutters
  • Compartment walls and floors
  • Fire-resisting walls and partitions
  • Suspended ceilings
  • Fire-resisting glazing
  • Fire doors and hardware
  • Industrial fire shutters and curtains
  • Fire fighting shafts and stairwells
  • Fire-resisting dampers (mechanical or intumescent) used in horizontal or vertical air distribution ducts
  • Fire-resisting ductwork
  • Fire-resisting service ducts and shafts
  • Linear gap seals
  • Penetration seals for pipes, cables and other services
  • Cavity barriers
  • Fire-resisting air transfer grilles (mechanical or intumescent)
  • The building envelope, e.g. fire-resisting external walls, curtain walls etc.
  • Reaction to fire coatings
  • Hydrocarbon structural fire protection system

Passive fire protection systems may be part of the fabric of a building, or added after it is constructed. PFP products should be fit for purpose and properly maintained. They must have been tested, assessed, and certified by third party certification, to independently verify the competency and quality of the workmanship of companies manufacturing, installing, and maintaining them.

Sycamore offers a range of services aimed at helping clients mitigate the risk of fire and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

Our services include:

Fire Risk Assessments: Conducting thorough assessments of premises to identify fire hazards, evaluate the level of risk, and recommend measures to reduce the likelihood of fire and its potential consequences.

Fire Safety Audits: Reviewing existing fire safety measures, procedures, and systems in place to assess their effectiveness and compliance with regulatory requirements. This includes inspecting fire alarms, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and other fire safety equipment.

Development of Fire Safety Policies and Procedures: Assisting clients in developing comprehensive fire safety policies, procedures, and emergency response plans tailored to their specific needs and requirements.

Training and Education: Providing fire safety training sessions and workshops for employees to raise awareness, educate on fire prevention techniques, evacuation procedures, and the proper use of fire safety equipment.

Fire Safety Design and Consultation: Collaborating with architects, engineers, and construction professionals during the design and planning stages of buildings to integrate effective fire safety measures, such as fire-resistant materials, compartmentation, and means of escape.

Regulatory Compliance Assistance: Helping clients navigate complex fire safety regulations and standards, ensuring that their premises meet legal requirements and obtain necessary permits and certifications.

Fire Safety Management Systems: Implementing and maintaining fire safety management systems to monitor and control fire risks continuously, including regular inspections, testing, and maintenance, we also provide NCF tagging and asset register set up.

Emergency Planning and Preparedness: Developing emergency evacuation plans, conducting drills, and providing guidance on emergency response procedures to ensure a coordinated and effective response in the event of a fire or other emergencies.

Specialist Advice and Consultation: Offering expert advice and consultancy services on specific fire safety issues, such as hazardous materials storage, fire protection for high-risk environments, and fire safety for historic or heritage buildings.

Post-Incident Investigation and Analysis: Conducting investigations into fire incidents to determine the cause, identify any failures in fire safety measures, and make recommendations for preventing similar incidents in the future.

These services are designed to help businesses and organizations proactively manage fire risks, protect lives and property, and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations and standards.

Sycamore, offers a range of installations and systems designed to prevent the spread of fire, protect structures, and enhance overall fire safety.

Our installations and products include:

Fire-Rated Doors and Frames: Installation of fire-rated doors and frames designed to withstand fire and smoke for a specified period, providing compartmentation and safe escape routes in buildings.

Fire-Rated Partitions and Walls: Construction and installation of fire-rated partitions and walls to create fire compartments, limiting the spread of fire and smoke within a building and protecting adjacent areas.

Fire-Resistant Glazing: Installation of fire-resistant glass and glazing systems that maintain integrity and prevent the passage of flames and smoke, while still allowing visibility and natural light transmission.

Firestop Systems: Installation of firestop systems, including fire-resistant sealants, sprays, and barriers, to seal penetrations in walls, floors, and ceilings, preventing the spread of fire and smoke through openings and gaps.

Fire Dampers and Smoke Dampers: Installation and maintenance of fire dampers and smoke dampers in HVAC duct-work to prevent the spread of fire and smoke through ventilation systems, maintaining compartmentation and protecting occupants.

Fireproof Coatings and Sprays: Application of fireproof coatings and sprays to structural elements, such as steel beams and columns, to enhance their fire resistance and prevent structural failure in the event of a fire.

Intumescent Paints and Coatings: Application of intumescent paints and coatings to surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, and doors, which expand when exposed to heat, forming a protective char layer that insulates and delays the spread of fire.

Fire-Resistant Insulation: Installation of fire-resistant insulation materials to enhance the fire resistance of building elements, such as walls, floors, and roofs, and reduce the risk of fire spread through thermal conduction.

Fireproof Sealants and Mortars: Application of fireproof sealants and mortars to fill gaps, joints, and voids in building materials, providing fire resistance and maintaining the integrity of fire-rated assemblies.

Fireproofing Structural Steel work: Application of fireproofing materials, such as cementitious sprays or intumescent coatings, to structural steel members to protect them from high temperatures and prevent structural collapse during a fire.

Installation of fire alarms: Installation of automatic fire alarms for commercial and residential premises (BS5839-1) and domestic alarm systems (BS5839-6)

Emergency Lighting installations: emergency light installations play a crucial role in emergency preparedness and evacuation procedures, providing essential illumination to facilitate safe evacuation and enhance overall occupant safety in buildings during emergencies.

These installations and systems play a crucial role in passive fire protection by containing fire and smoke, limiting its spread, and providing occupants with vital time to evacuate safely. Sycamore work closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and building owners to design, install, and maintain effective fire protection measures tailored to specific building requirements and regulatory standards.
